2014 McHenry Hohnen Rolling Stone
Nose
Aromatically the 2014 Rolling Stone balances perfectly between fragrant notes of violets and blueberry confection with savoury black olive tapenade and bitter cocoa dust.
Palate
The plush palate displays power and elegance combining intense dark fruits and sweet spice with firm gravelly tannins providing this wine with impressive length.
Growing Conditions
Made in very limited quantities from selected parcels of fruit within the Hazel Vineyard, this wine truly expresses the essence of this incredible southern Margaret River site.
Winemaking
The best parcels of fruit were fermented in open stone fermenters with the use of indigenous yeasts. Some of the wines were left on skins post fermentation for several weeks to provide savouriness and structure to the blend, others were pressed earlier for freshness and aromatic lift. Each variety was kept separate and aged in the finest selection of French oak barrels for 18 months prior to bottling. The wine remains unfined and unfiltered.
Score: 92 Points
Powerful, quite pungent and dominated by dark-fruit characters: there is no shortage of intent here. Fleshy, quite showy on the palate, but with refined glossy oak and fine-grained tannins. A serious wine with the depth and concentration to age very well. A classic Margaret River example, well worth buying and laying down for several years. Drinking Window 2022 – 2030
